Road

The Gautrain Project has led to many changes and developments in road transport.

The detouring, re-structuring and construction of various roads to make way for the Gautrain has permitted legal intervention into a range of areas, including project finance, safety, quality bus and taxi services, road maintenance, congestion, traffic management and road works.

The road sector is arguably the sector that is used by most members of our society commuting to and from work, involving the largest movement of humankind to and from north to south on a daily basis between Pretoria and Johannesburg. Roads therefore play a vital role in our society's economic activity and growth. They are essential in creating the right infrastructure to remove access barriers to businesses in our society. Currently car use for all journey purposes dominates, which compounds air pollution and a negative impact on the environment.

The introduction of an electronic tolling system in Gauteng, known as the open road toll (ORT) system, is expected to come into operation in April 2011 and to perform around two million toll transactions per day. Users of Gauteng freeways should be aware of the implications of the ORT system, such as the additional cost per trip and that non-payment of toll fees may result in points being added to the demerit system.
