South Africa has a very well developed and sophisticated financial institutions sector. However, the country is susceptible to international developments such as the sub prime problems which beset, in particular, the markets in the USA. Furthermore, South Africa has been affected by increasing interest rates for several quarters as a result of unacceptably high inflation in the country. The South African government has set certain parameters for inflation and the South African Reserve Bank, through its Monetary Policy Committee, uses its only effective weapon to fight inflation, namely adjusting interest rates to curb consumer spending. This has had minimal impact to date although the outlook is for stabilisation of both inflation and interest rates.
