Ian is head of the firm’s competition and intellectual property practice groups, and also part of its retail sector. He is a member of the firm’s corporate and commercial team.
His expertise includes giving advice on corporate and commercial issues, contractual matters relating to franchising, advertising and sponsorship, as well as competition matters and the protection and licensing of intellectual property and branding. He acts for numerous South African and international household names in the franchising industry.
Ian’s recent experience includes:
- Acting for parties in recent investigations by the Competition Commission into the maize and flour milling industry, glass industry and wholesale and retail sale of bicycles.
- Acting for multi-national franchisors in the establishment of their businesses in South Africa in the food, education, sports coaching and retail sectors.
- Acting for a multi-national sporting goods company with regard to the protection of its trademarks in South Africa.
- Redrafting the Code of Ethics and Business Practices of the Franchise Association of South Africa in relation to the Consumer Protection Act.
- Advising a multi-national mining company in regard to the competition implications of a cross-border share acquisition.
He has written articles on franchising, intellectual property and competition law for a number of publications and is a regular speaker at our in-house seminars.
Ian was awarded the Restaurant Association of South Africa Rosetta Award for Best Industry Personality 2009.
